What’s the Condition of Your Bible?
By Crystal Niehoff

“A Bible that’s falling apart usually belongs to someone who isn’t.”~Charles H. Spurgeon

Raise your hands if your Bible is tattered and torn, worn from daily reading and study– highlighted text, earmarked pages, notes in the margins? Or does your Bible sit neatly on a shelf collecting dust?

A chaplain recently shared with me that he has boxes sitting in his office of nearly two hundred Bibles that he can’t even give away because nobody wants them. This both shocked and saddened me. We scramble in our PWOCs each year to get the newest and greatest Bible studies available to have ready for kickoff, yet the most important Book of all sits in this chaplain’s office in a box, unread, unwanted, unloved.

Growing up, I’m so thankful for my pastor, who taught his congregation to search the Scriptures for ourselves, and not just take his word for it. As a result, Pastor Milton set me on a lifelong path of double-checking the accuracy of each sermon, lesson, Bible study, and book against the truth found in the Bible.

God’s Holy Word is our manual for life. Our How-To. Our source for all truth and wisdom. Our roadmap for this journey through our time on earth as we make our way to our Heavenly homes.

Want direction for a challenging situation? – Proverbs 3:5-6, Romans 8:28
Got a financial problem? – Malachi 3:10, Romans 13:8
Need an answer to prayer? – I John 5:14-15
Facing a difficult marriage? – I Peter 4:8, Ephesians 4:2-3
Need healing? – Jeremiah 17:14
Are you worried, lonely, or brokenhearted? – Isaiah 41:10, John 14:27, Psalms 147:3

We can trust the Bible because it is…

Absolute Truth
The term “Sola Scriptura” or “the Bible alone” is a phrase that dipicts the simple truth that there is only one revelation from God that people possess today, the written Scriptures or the Bible.

“I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: if anyone adds to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book, and if anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God will take away his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.” ~Revelation 22:18-19 ESV

All-Sufficient
The Bible can stand alone without anything added to it, and perhaps the most powerful verses explaining the sufficiency of the Bible are found in Psalm 19:7–14, in which David rejoices in God’s Word, declaring it to be perfect, sure, right, pure, enduring, true, and righteous.

Infallible and the Actual Inspired Word Of God
“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ~2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV
