Start a Knitting Group

By Trinity Ann Mangum

As you knit, or teach ladies to knit each week, share a devotional thought.  Focus on the Word of God as you put the pieces together in your group.

There are study suggestions to download as well.

Week 1
A SINGLE THREAD
: We are all the same thread- the family of God.

Devotional thought: Acts 4:32 ESV “Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.”

Week 2
SECURE STITCHES
: Each stitch is suspended from the one above it and connected on every side. When a stitch is not connected, it can become undone when the yarn is pulled.

Devotional thought: Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” When we share the burden, we are united and protected on all sides. It’s harder for us to become unraveled.

Week 3
MANY COLORS OF YARN
: We are all members of one body. We come together to make God’s beautiful kingdom.

Devotional thought: 1 Corinthians 12:14-26 “ Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now, if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not, for that reason, stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not, for that reason, stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it.”

Week 4
DROPPED STITCHES
: Getting a hole can cause the unraveling of a knitted fabric. God doesn’t drop stitches; he knits us together in unity.

Devotional thought: 1 Samuel 18:1 ESV “As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”

Week 5
FROGGING
: Despite efforts, sometimes a knitting project needs to be pulled apart and start over. Much like us, we need to be pruned; sometimes, God cuts many branches so more growth can happen.

Devotional thought: John 15

__________

Week 6
BINDING
: Finishing a knit fabric requires binding, which secures the final stitch and prevents the project from unraveling.

Devotional thought: In Isaiah 61, the prophecy of the messiah is written. Jesus reads this scroll in synagogue, Luke 4:14-30,”….Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

Week 7
THE FINISHED PRODUCT
: Knitted fabrics are unique among textiles in that they can stretch in any direction and maintain their shape, dimensions, and stretchiness even after several cycles of washing and wearing.  As Christians, we are stretched, and we are persecuted. We have testimonies to share that allow us to reach others and share the love of God. We are disciples, with God at the center of our lives, walking in Christ’s love, wisdom, and knowledge.

Devotional Thought: Matthew 10:16-25 ” Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes. “A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher and the servant like his master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household.”
